Manchester United have made the Mateus Fernandes transfer a priority as they prepare for another major midfield rebuild this summer. The West Ham midfielder has emerged as one of the most admired options within United’s data department and by manager Michael Carrick.
United interest in Fernandes
Fernandes is viewed as a technically strong deep‑lying midfielder capable of shielding the defence and progressing play. He delivered a bright season despite West Ham’s relegation, making 35 starts, scoring three goals and providing four assists. His ability to stabilise midfield phases has made him one of the most attractive young profiles in the league.
Transfer fee and negotiation stance
United believe a deal around £40 million is realistic, but West Ham have set an £80m valuation after paying Southampton £38m last summer. The Hammers are under financial pressure following relegation and may need to generate around £150m through sales, which could force them to consider lower offers. United aim to negotiate the fee closer to the £50m range while avoiding an inflated bidding war.
Competition and timing
Arsenal are also pushing for Fernandes as Mikel Arteta seeks more quality and depth in midfield. INEOS must move quickly to avoid a hijack attempt, but remain disciplined to ensure the final fee aligns with their long‑term squad‑building strategy.
