Walid Regragui stepped down as Morocco’s head coach after weeks of speculation. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed his departure during a press conference in Rabat. FRMF president Faouzi Lekjaa announced the decision and introduced Mohamed Ouahbi as the new national team coach.
Regragui said he left with gratitude and conviction. He believed the team needed new energy before the World Cup. He also stressed that Morocco required a different perspective to continue progressing. His exit comes only three months before the tournament.
Ouahbi Takes Charge With a Clear Roadmap
Mohamed Ouahbi, 49, accepted the role with confidence. He highlighted the importance of structure and long‑term planning. He previously guided Morocco’s youth team to a World Cup title in Chile. His experience with development projects shaped his approach.
Ouahbi said the objective was not only change but sustainable growth. He emphasized the need for a strong identity and a clear football philosophy. He also stated that Morocco must focus on performance rather than individual names. His goal is to maintain global recognition and elevate the national team’s competitive level.
Morocco Prepares for a Tough World Cup Group
Morocco will open their World Cup campaign against Brazil on 13 June. The Atlas Lions will also face Scotland and Haiti. Ouahbi aims to build on Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup run, where the team reached the semi‑finals.
He wants to strengthen the squad’s mentality and maintain consistency. He also plans to build on the achievements of Moroccan football across all age categories.
