Miguel Cardoso Slams SA Football’s ‘Cat and Mouse’ Mentality

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso delivered a fierce critique of South African football after Orbit College refused to move their Betway Premiership clash to help Sundowns prepare for their CAF Champions League quarterfinal. Cardoso argued that the PSL’s approach hurts clubs representing the country on the continent.

Cardoso Questions PSL Fixture Logic

Cardoso highlighted the lack of fixture relief for teams competing in CAF tournaments. He compared the situation to France, where Ligue 1 delayed matches to help Paris Saint‑Germain prepare for European competition. He said Sundowns requested a date change but received only an option to play on a worse pitch. Two days later, they must face a Champions League quarterfinal. Cardoso believes this reflects a deeper structural issue.

‘We Represent South Africa, Not Just Sundowns’

The coach stressed that Sundowns carry the national flag in Africa. He referenced Portugal, where fans support Benfica, Sporting Braga, or Vitória Guimarães in Europe regardless of rivalry. Cardoso criticised the local mindset, saying PSL clubs act like “cat and mouse” rivals who prefer to see each other fail internationally. He praised Orlando Pirates for last season’s CAF run and expressed disappointment at their early exit this year. He also wants Kaizer Chiefs competing strongly because it elevates South African football.

Call for Unity in South African Football

Cardoso revealed that the Portuguese FA invited him to speak at a major football congress. They asked him to describe the reality of South African football, and he questioned whether he should present the truth or a polished version. He urged PSL clubs—from Stellenbosch, Sekhukhune, and TS Galaxy to Durban sides—to unite and build a long‑term football vision. He believes collective progress strengthens the entire league.
