Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr Demands Release of Detained Senegal Supporters

Sarr Calls for Action After AFCON Final Chaos

Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr demanded the release of 18 detained Senegal supporters held in Morocco. Authorities arrested the fans after violent clashes during the Africa Cup of Nations final. Sarr missed the match due to illness, yet he still supported his teammates as they secured a 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco.

The win marked Senegal’s second AFCON title. However, the celebration quickly faded as unrest erupted inside Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. Security forces clashed with Senegalese fans, and the match paused for 17 minutes.

Senegal Star Labels Detentions an Injustice

Sarr posted on X exactly 31 days after the final. He condemned the ongoing detentions and demanded immediate action. He stated that the supporters committed no crime beyond cheering for their nation with passion. His message gained traction across Senegal, increasing pressure on Moroccan authorities.

The 18 supporters return to court on Thursday. Their case continues to spark frustration among Senegalese fans and officials.

CAF Punishes Both Federations

CAF issued heavy fines after reviewing the chaotic scenes. Senegal’s FA received £445,000 for fan behaviour and team conduct. Coach Pape Thiaw earned a five‑match ban and a £72,000 fine for instructing players to leave the pitch after a disputed penalty decision.

Morocco’s FA received £228,000 for misconduct by players, staff, and ball boys. Officials accused ball boys of repeatedly trying to steal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towel. CAF also punished Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari for unsporting behaviour.

Senegal’s Victory Overshadowed

Senegal eventually returned to the pitch and won through Pape Gueye’s extra‑time strike. Yet the unrest overshadowed the triumph. The detentions now dominate the conversation, and Sarr’s public stance adds new urgency.
