The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been pushed back once more, with Caf confirming a new July–August 2026 window only 12 days before kickoff. The decision ends weeks of speculation but leaves national teams scrambling.
Host Request Triggers Late Change
Wafcon was set for 17 March to 3 April, but Morocco requested a shift due to “unforeseen circumstances.” Caf accepted the request after discussions with Fifa and other partners. The new dates—25 July to 16 August 2026—create a long gap with no competitive matches during this international break.
Women’s Africa Cup postponement
The tournament remains vital for Africa’s route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup, offering four direct qualification spots and two playoff places. The delay disrupts preparation for several nations, including Nigeria, who lifted the 2024 title after that edition also suffered postponements.
Caf Promises Stability Despite Uncertainty
Caf said preparations continue and expressed confidence in delivering a successful event. However, the lack of clarity around the “unforeseen circumstances” raises concerns about planning and communication. The organisation must now rebuild trust with teams and fans after another scheduling shift.
Expanded Format Adds Pressure
Wafcon expands to 16 teams for the first time, increasing logistical demands and competitive intensity. The postponement forces federations to adjust training cycles, travel plans, and squad management strategies.
